In Space, no one can hear you scream.
Plot: The Mining Space Ship Nostromo is traveling back to earth when a distress signal is recieved. The crew is awakened and they travel to the area of the signal. One cre member discovers an egg. The rest, as they say, is history.
Does the word classic mean anything to you? For most it means Gone with the Wind, The Godfather, Ben Hurr, etc. But for me, it means Alien. This film is an absolute classic horror and scifi film. Nothing except The Thing, Aliens, and Predator come close.
Acting: Top Notch Performances. Sigourney Weaver in the role of her career as Ripley, and she is fantastic. The best horror film herione to grace the screen in my opinion. Tom Skerrit is great as Dallas. Yaphet Kotto and Harry Dean Stanton provide some comic relief and really struck me as believable. Veronica Cartwright acts horrified throughout the film and really seems scared out of her mind. The Shelly Duvall of the film. Ian Holm is (SPOILER ALERT) chilling as the android Ash and was fantastic. His admiration of the alien over the crew was frightening. (END SPOILERS) John Hurt is good, and his standout (SPOILER ALERT) was the chestbursting scene. He seemed like he was truly in agony. (END SPOILERS) A stellar cast.
Special FX: Superb. The Creature is amazing. Designed by Swiss Surealist and Biomechanical Artist H.R. Giger, the creature is horrific yet somehow beautiful and majestic at the same time. The gore is quick but still effective. The dinner scene looks fantastic. Top Notch.
Directing: Ridley Scott is an amazing director and he knows how to make a film work. His direction is truly creepy and claustrophobic. The strobe lights and flashing sirens add to the effect greatly. Scott makes this a truly scary film.
Overall: Alien is not only a great scifi film, but a great horror film as well. I've said everything that needs to be said. A horror great.
Rating: 10/10
