Plot: I believe you've heard this one before. 4 friends are traveling cross country when their car breaks down. Guess what happens next?
House of 1000 Corpses is a movie that had a lot going for it and it just falls flat on its face. I can deal with plot holes and minor story problems, but this film just doesn't make sense at all. But, however, it makes up for some of those problems with exellent sets, kooky locations, and bizzare but interesting direction.
Acting: So so. One one hand we have the killers, who are scene stealers and interesting all the way. Sid Haig is kooky as Captain Spaulding, and was fun to watch. Bill Mosely is one badass mofo as Otis. One the other hand, we have the "good guys", who are completely uninteresting and bland. I suppose that was Zombie's goal, but having only interesting villains brings the film down.
Special FX: Very good. We get lots o' gore. The Dr. Satan and corpse makeups were great and the gore effects were good, too. Nice Work.
Directing: Rob Zombie's direction is the spotlight, here. The direction is completely bizzare and gritty home video style with great use of colors. I loved the kooky places and dank surroundings. The shootout scene was especially well done. However, this bizzare direction is focused on and the script and dialouge are all but forgotten, left with inane ramblings and sound clips.
Music: What you'd expect from a Rob Zombie Film. Nice hard rock score. I loved the use of slow music during the shootout scene.
Overall: HO1K Corpses is a hard movie to hate, but a hard movie to praise. On one side, we have interesting direction, good FX, neat, creative villians, and cool locations. On the other side, we have inane dialouge, a derviative story, and virtually no sympathy or development for the main characters. I'm effected much more by violence inflicted on an on screen character when I actually care about the character being tortured. But as far as this goes, I feel the good outway the bad, and the flaws can be overlooked to the extent where they don't really interfere with the creativity (excluding the plot) in this film. HO1K Corpses isn't a great film, certainly a dissapointment, but a damn fine effort. HO1K Corpses was Rob Zombie's good effort to make a horror film for horror fans, but that is for the horror fan to decide. Most people have a love or hate relationship with the film. Me? I'm stuck in the middle.
