This is one of the very first independent films ever made, and in my book its one of the greatest. Carnival of Souls carries a whole deal of pshycological manner. It carries you off into unkown places, and leaves you there thinking.
The story goes that a young woman falls off a bridge with her car, and she umerges barely alive. She doesn't remember anything what just happend, and something makes her go with her car to a town where a old carnival used to be. She seems to be very attracted to whats hidden inside the carnival, and she unfolds the dark secrets that rest within. But the carnival isn't abandoned, it has dead-like residents who died drowning. The dead don't like her staying, so they have their fun with her, and she ends up back in that car where the beggining left off.
What just happend, was this all a dream? I don't know, ask the people who made it. 10 out of 10.

This and Night of The Living Dead are rivals, people don't give this movie the respect it deserves because NOTLD was directed by George A. Romero, but Carnival of Souls is just as good, a true classic.

If you like this movie so much then I recommend you purchase the Criterion DVD of Carnival of Souls. Not only does it come with some good extras, but the film is fully restored!!! You can see the glimmer in Herk Harvey's eyes as he looks into the camera during the dance of death sequence!! It's brilliant!! Awesome film!! It's too bad Herk didn't do any more horror films. He would surely have been ranked next to horror giants like Carpenter and Romero if he did. Carnival of Souls is better than NOTLD in my opinion. 9/10 for me.

Ya but he didn't sadly. Alot fo people don't realize how great a horror movie director he could have been, shame. At least one classic is here. Yes I love the dance of death sequence, it was awesome, I'm probably going to watch it sometime.
