One of the very best silent horror classic ever made, directed by Robert Wiene, and written by Hans Janowitz who got the idea from something that really happend. He was at a carnival one day when he saw a strange looking man lurking in the shadows, the next day he heard that a young woman was murdered in the same spot. When he went to the funeral he saw the same guy there, he didn't have any proof, but he decided to take this and make it a story, that is, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. One of the great aspects of this film is the way the houses and structures look, they're all dented, and slanted. Also the silentness makes the film very moody. Also the technique they used at the beggining was very useful, where theres a little frame around the characters head, afterwards followed by the ghost-looking girl that walks past the camera, creepy. Alot of peculiar stuff happend on the set aswell, actresses dieing, very weird indeed. Also the character Cezare played by Werner Kraus was a beautifully played out role, the terror in the eyes of that creature were trully astonishing, The part were Cezare first opens his eyes is probably the scene most people remember the most.
And you can't forget Dr. Caligari played by Conrad Veidt, truly a sinister character. All in all one of the greatest horror movies ever made, and a perfect 10, out of a 10 in my book. If you havn't seen it, see it right now, you gotta see what the first 'considered' horror film is all about.
The story goes that Dr. Caliagri sends his somnabulist Cesare who can predict the future to commit horrible murders. People realize who's sending the creature, so they send Claigari to the mental asylum. But Caligari gets out because he was the director of the asylum after all, and the truth lays buried for all time.
