Phantasm, the movie that brought Tallman to the hall of fame of horror characters, the movie that took your fear of death, and put it in a box waiting for you to open it, the movie that spawned many sequels, the movie that stays a horror great for all time.
It wasn't long after its release that Phantasm made horror fans crave for more of its kind, the dead people being changed into little dwarves then sent off to a distant planet in another dimension, Tall Man and his awesome balls that suck the blood out of you, and you can't forget the main characters who brought new heroes to the silver screen.
This movie nonetheless creeps people out to this day, it has pretty good special effects. What am I saying? It has AWESOME special effects (for its time anyways). How can you forget the scene where the bug comes out of the box and starts attacking Mike, (well maybe thats an exception), how about when Mike cuts the Tall Man's fingers off when he gets his finger stuck in the doorway, thats nice special effects in my opinion
Also this is the best movie out of the series, the other ones weren't even close to being as good as this one. Phantasm 2 was good too, but not good enough. Also a round of applause for writer and director Don Coscrelli, without him you wouldn't get what you see today.
Its quite hard to believe that the dwarves were actually neighbors of the producers of the film. I mean all they had to do is jump around acting like maniacs, and the job was done. Speaking of dwarves, I like the part where it shows the transportation room to the other planet, and in each box theres a dwarf. It kind of reminded me of a scifi film at that point.
On the budget that they had i think it would have been cool if they had more gore, I mean the only real gore in the movie was when the ball sucks out all the janitors blood through out the eye, all the other gore was yellowish blood from the tallman, and the dwarves.
What I really liked about this movie was the cast, a solid, likeable cast. Especially Mike Pearson, who's real name is ironically (Michael Baldwin), Jody (Bill Thornbury), and the ice cream man (Reggie Bannister) who plays as the name Reggie. And of course you can't forget Angus Scrimm, the one and only Tall Man.
Another like is the deaths, going from the infamous eye sucking ball, to the death of Mike's brother, who died getting layed by the Tall Man disguised as a woman.
Another thing I liked is the fast pace Mike was at throughout the movie, he would always be on the run, escaping from his room, fighting off dwarves, protecting his aunt, and running away from the Tallman.
One thing I didn't like about the movie has got to be almost no gore, but then again you don't need gore to have a perfect movie, as I said before you need a solid cast with a great plot.
There's some quotes in this movie that really stick out of my mind, among them being: "Boyyyy! Now....You....Die!", to "I know what we'll do, we'll lay the mother fucker flat, and drive a stake through his fucking heart!".
In the end, this is a masterpiece, well worth the watch, a perfect rating (10 out of 10), and one of the greatest horror movies ever made.
The story goes that Mike's older brother gets killed by a very tall man, and later at his funeral he see's the guy carrying the body in the hearse, who is this 'tall man', a necrophilian, or just a sick guy trying to do something special with the body? You find out.
