Here is a review of a film that has been rarely seen in any shape or form since a screening at the London Frightfest two years ago, but do bear with me. The reason I am including it is simply because it contains some memorable moments of horror and needs a little of exposure. I am not sure of it's whereabouts at the moment, but hopefully it will see the light of day in some shape or form.
TUNO NEGRO (DARK MINSTREL) is another offering from Spain, which like Japan is turning into the new centre of international gore offerings. After the excellent DEVIL'S BACKBONE (which I thought was better than THE SIXTH SENSE), this was another of those foreign movies that I felt would get a lot more attention than it did.
The plot concerns a group of medical students on their graduation year, learning to do autopsies etc. Throw in a mystery killer and you have the makings of a rather neat little horror thriller. If you want points of reference, think SUSPIRIA mixed in with a bit of SCREAM, which others described it as at the time of the screening. It also has a morgue sequence that is up there with FRIDAY THE 13TH - THE FINAL CHAPTER, with a little bit of dark perverse humour which is simply delicious in a manner of speaking. The lead actress reminds me also of Jessica Harper in SUSPIRIA.
Worth checking out if it turns up in the horror or foreign section of DVD stores local to you.
