How to Make a Monster
Year: 2001
Directed by: George Huang
Written by: George Huang
Rated R for Violence, gore, language and nudity
Starring:
*Clea Duvall as Laura
*Tyler Mane as Hardcore
*Karim Prince as Saul
*Jason Marsden as Bug
*James Sullivan as The Overlord
Produced by: Creature Features
Published by: Columbia Tristar
Running Time: 91 Minutes
My Rating: 6/10 Paws Up[
Synopsis: Three computer programmers have been recruited by a software company to create a horror video game called "Evilution". Aside from some major competition amongst themselves, all is going smoothly. Then, a power surge causes a motion capture suit to spring to life! The MoCap suit begins to stalk the lab, emulating the final boss in the game. And the programmers are the enemy....
Splatter Factor: 4/7 The plasma spills courtesy of a severed leg, a severed head, a head ripping and lots of blood splattering.
Acting: 5/10
*CLEA DUVALL has the best character out of the bunch. Laura goes through some major transformations (personality-wise) throughout the film. As for her acting talent, she's decent but nothing spectacular.
*TYLER MANE is extremely over the top. He has the hammiest lines ("Scary is as scary does!") and is basically a B-movie in the flesh! Don't expect much!
*KARIM PRINCE is the focused, intelligent one of the bunch. He simply blends in with the other cliches. Meh
*JASON MARSDEN portrays the classic "computer nerd" with zero self-confidence. He does good with a neurotic character, but he's also annoying at times too.
*JAMES SULLIVAN plays the mechanical monster and has nothing else to do then to stomp around and roar. Still, he does what he has to do quite well.
*Overall, it's your standard B-movie cast. Full of cliches and stereotypes but they don't do terrible. Basic at best, but no one watches these types of films for good acting!
"I'm PFD- Programmed for Damage!"- Tyler Mane as Hardcore
"Hey pig-f**ker! Game on!"- Clea Duvall to the Overlord
My Thoughts
Basically what we have here, is a slasher film at heartand part of a small series of remake films. But it's a slasher film with a clever and refreshing twist. The killer begins as a skeletal MoCap suit and it begins to harvest bodyparts of its victims to make itself look more like the monster from the game! The end result looks like a cyborg version of Shao Kahn (from Mortal Kombat). I thought this was clever and an interesting twist. Aside from that one notion, this film is nothing truly special.
All of the characters are cliched. The naive one, the tough guy, the quiet guy and the introspective, smart one. The whole movie is very predictable and cheesy. But it's a lot of fun (despite a slow beginning) and worth a watch. The fact that the monster is made up of various body parts makes for a Frankenstein feel. Simply put, it's a dumb and fun slasher pic. Nothing that unique, but it has a clever twist and some subtle social commentary (Nice guys finish last and Money is the root of all Evil).
Bottom Line: Predictable and stupid. But Lord knows i liked it, even though it's a bad movie at heart!
Things You may or May not have Known...
*Julie Strain has a cameo as herself (and shes naked, of course)
*Look for Danny Masterson (Hyde from That 70's Show) in an unbilled appearence as Laura's ex-boyfriend
*Co-produced by Stan Winston (although he had nothing to do with the monster creation)!
*An In-Name-Only remake of the film from the fifties
Horror Filmographies
*Steven Culp (Peter)- Jason Goes to Hell (1993)
*Clea Duvall- The Faculty (1998), The Astronaut's Wife (1999), Ghosts of Mars (2001), Identity (2003), The Grudge (2004)
*Tyler Mane- The Devil's Rejects (2005)
*James Sullivan- Terror Toons (2002)
