ALIENS surprised and delighted everyone on it's release in 1986, leaving critics with the only desire to consume sour grapes, whereas the good-old public were won over by it's virtues. James Cameron flipped the expectations of the fan community and wisely expanded the original's story by setting it in a different time frame whilst keeping the alien's murderous intent intact for a new generation.
Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) is picked up by a salvage team in the escape ship that she used to disembark from the Nostromo, the ship she destroyed in the original ALIEN. However, she is under suspicion from the authorities who don't believe than an alien life-form killed her crew and prompted her to blow up 'expensive piece of hardware. 42 million in adjusted dollars' according to one of the suits at her appeal. She loses it and is demoted to cargo worker having lost her flight officer position.
However, when she learns that the planet where the original alien was first discovered has been populated by 60-70 families, she is horrified. Her manner doesn't improve when she learns that contact has been lost and has been asked to accompany marines to the planet with the promise of reinstatement to her previous position......
ALIENS is a masterclass in using familiar elements and redesigning them to create something fresh. It looks different without being too much so, whilst keeping the heart and soul of the original. Good performances from Weaver, Michael Biehn, Bill Paxton, Jeanette Goldstein and Al Matthews as the Louis Gossett Jr-style colonel. A must for non-horror fans as well.
