Unquestionably my choice of the Frightfest offerings, most of which were too downright serious for their own good and buried whatever remnants of a plot and good suspense by drawing out the visuals. MONSTER MAN is like a good loaf of bread - wholesome, tasty and leaves you satisfied (with or without butter)
The story, such as it is, concerns two mates, one loud and one quiet. They are driving across America to try and talk a girl out of marrying her intended so she can marry the quiet one. Things get a little more interesting when they encounter a darkened car driving alongside them, followed by the DUEL truck's crazy cousin. The discovery of a trailer with murderous evidence also proves to be another element in a journey that is against the grain of their original intention.
If you've seen the movies it pays homage to (TCM, EVIL DEAD, AMERICAN PIE

then you'll know that it is what it is. As it stands. this has more than enough brilliant moments of improvisation to carry it on to the inevitable end. Like the best of the post-HALLOWEEN/FRIDAY 13TH/EVIL DEAD spinoffs, it carries it's tongue firmly on the sleeve of a severed arm, which is pretty much what most of us demand from horror most of the time.
Not original like many classics, nor as thought-provoking, MONSTER MAN is belly-achingly good fun.

I've heard mixed reviews for this, but I'll check it out when my video store gets it.
