This Christmas Horror from 1980 is suprisingly good. It is less an outright horror and more the study of a man desenct into madness.
It all starts when Harry Straddling is a young boy. Santa comes to visit on Christmas Eve, Harry being a young boy sneaks down to take a peek, he finds Santa on his knees kissing his way up Mommy's leg.
Flash forward many years to Harry as an adult, his life is based around Christmas, he works in a christmas themed toy factory where he recently became manager but hates it as he likes being on the line working with the toys. He watches the Macy's day parade to see the big balloon of Santa and even starts to critize the toys his company makes as shoddy and not worthy of Christmas or Saint Nick.
After turning down the yearly invitition to eat with his older brother and his family at Christmas, Harry gets the idea that the world needs Santa and he can do it. So after being brushed off at the company christmas party, Harry heads back to the factory and steals all the toys there. He dresses up as Santa and there the story truly begins.
As he patrols the neighborhoods in his reindeer van, he slowly goes mad. Using his list of naughty and nice(thats right over the year he keeps track of every kid in the neigherhood) he gives gifts to the nice ones and punishes both the kid and parent of the naughty ones. Then when people refuse to believe he is santa, he snaps.
That is where the killing really starts, the movie sprials into his madness, he is upbeat and even dancing at one point(which you have to see) when people believe him. At other times depressed and murdurous at others all building up to the suprise ending which I won't spoil here.
All in All this is one of the better Christmas Horrors in my book, some people won't like it as it is dated and a little slow at times as it is a look into gradual madness but things do speed up and mob mentally takes over. I would recommend this to anyone who like holiday themed horror or more pycholical horror as opposed to just blood and guts.
7/10
