The Girl with the Pearl Earring's Peter Webber has been signed on to helm Behind the Mask, the film adaptation of the fourth Hannibal Lecter book by Thomas Harris. It is expected that Universal and MGM will share distribution rights.

The film will be a prequel to Harris' other Hannibal Lecter books, which include "Red Dragon," "The Silence of the Lambs," and "Hannibal." Harris' forthcoming novel is expected to be released next fall, with the movie scheduled for a summer 2006 debut.

"It is a revenge story that shows why he became a cannibal," says producer Dino De Laurentiis. "But he kills people that audiences want to see killed. So while there is a natural revulsion, the sympathy toward Hannibal remains."

A search is currently going on for young boys and actors to play Hannibal Lecter at three stages in his life.

"Behind the mask" yes, another chapter on Lecter's legacy. Just after "Red Dragon" was premiered, Hopkins was talking of a 4th movie of Hannibal, but he isn't in it, because they need a younger actor to make the young hannibal.

Director Peter Weber is tipped to direct the forthcoming prequel to the Hannibal Lecter series titled Behind The Mask. Weber is best known for his work on Girl with a Pearl Earring and production will start in May for a 2006 release.

Yeah, I hope they get some good people to play Lecter. I'd hate to see the character ruined. But I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

But the original Hannibal wasn't played by Hopkins, has anyone seen Manhunter? I think Brian Cox played Hannibal.

Yea he did and I think compared to Hopkins he was not as good.

Yeah. Brian Cox also voiced Lionel Starkweather in the videogame Manhunt. He's been in a ton of films.

I'm not sure who would make a good young Hannibal. Anyone have any ideas?

Ever wonder one thing? When Harris started the novels, He never had a human actor to model with. Now, though, Anthony Hopkins and Hannibal Lector are joined at the hip. So, does this affect his direction of Hannibal? Does he now consider Hopkins mannerisms when penning the further tales of Hannibal? Has the Actor now become the starting point for the character? Food for thought.
