Can either stand alone, or do they both have to be incorparated to make a stellar movie.?

a movie without a good storyline is nothing. gore can add to to a movie and make it beter but gore is just an added affect . a movie with a great plot can stand alone but a movie that mixes the two well is best .

With the more movies that exist, the chance of originality ever-so slightly decreases. My bet would be on gore. Make something visually stunning.

I figured most would be into more storyline driven movies, but I got to thinking about how most everyone loves Dead Alive, and the whole premise of the movie is basically to be gorey as fuck. Personally, Ill take a storyline type movie, say like the Shining, but Ido love gore, as long as a story comes with it.

A storyline is key to a good film. Nuff said. Gore is just a juicy bonus.

It depends on the mood of the film and the theme it presents. Take The Others for example. Here's a film with a strong story, but it doesn't need the use of gore to make it interesting. But then take Dead Alive; the gore is needed to boast its level of dark humor and comedic factor, and even though there's little-to-no story, it is still an entertaining horror film.
Ultimately, story dominates gore, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Well, I think it depends. I ultimately think that story is much more crucial. Look at "Halloween" or "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre"; they are almost devoid of any gore what-so-ever. However, I am a pretty big fan of Lucio Fulci, and while he does have stories, they aren't exactly Shakespeare. However, what he does do is make some of the most amazing gore ever (well Giannetto De Rossi does).
So in conclusion I think either (by itself) can make a movie good, and obviously combine them together and you get a great product.
...but if forced to choose I'd say story.

Gore! Gore! Mo Gore por Favor! ........................................... Anyway, I don't see how gore alone is a essential part in a horror film. Acting, story, and direction are always the most important factors. Don't get me wrong, I love gore, but a terrible movie filled with gore is still a terrible movie.
