Having been a horror fan for 23 years this month, I can only hope that the genre will find new ways to surprise us. It's sad that I am only hoping for reissues of classic horror on DVD (THE FUNHOUSE is one that I hope will get a UK release at some point
Anyway, this thought occured to me the other night when FINAL DESTINATION and ROLLERCOASTER both played on the same evening on UK TV. Both films had suitably horrible moments (the premonition of the plane explosion is one of the best creative moments of inspiration I have seen in an age and there were some great creative deaths elsewhere) and the latter film had a terrific rollercoaster crash at the start.
I am a little bit tired of the CGI distintegration horror that films like THE MUMMY and VAN HELSING revel in and would like to see a return to more physical effects a la Dick Smith and Tom Savini's work. I would also like to see some of the genre's current favourite directors take more chances and be more imaginative. I don't seem to be getting the kind of thrill-chill factor that films like THE OMEN and JAWS can give you.
If HALLOWEEN and THE EVIL DEAD can do it on limited resources, why can some of the bigger budgeted films?

The last line should read 'can't' instead of 'can'
