Just saw Bruce 'ASH' Campbell's latest offering. He plays the real Elvis who is stuck in a retirement home with a black JFK. Apparently, when Elvis was younger, he wanted a break from fame and switched places with an impersonater only to have the fake Elvis drop dead and leaving him stuck in the imposters guise.
Flash forward to present time and Elvis is living in a retirement home and suffering from dick sores. Then we see an elderly woman attacked by a beetle followed by some ghastly figure in the shadows. The beast sucks her soul dry and kills her, which looks like natural death and in an old folks home, thats nothing shocking.
JFK suspects something and investigates (Not as good as our very own Nightmare Holmes) and fills Elvis up to date on his findings. Elvis, who was just attacked by the beetle, in one of the funniest scenes of Campbells career, doesnt believe JFK and thinks they just have a Cockroach problem.
His doubt is removed when he actually sees the beast with his own 2 eyes! Its a Mummy! King Tut? Nope. His brother, Bubba Hotep! And he is stealing souls secretly in the retirement home. So now its up to our heroes to step up and fight the evil that wanders the place.
The story moves at its own pace. Dont expect a fast and frenetic film like his previous Evil Dead films. This film takes its time and the main attraction is Bruce himself. He reminds you that he should be headlining big budget films and not slumming in independents. No one makes you laugh like Bruce Campbell does. Every scene showcases just how cool bruce is, even when he's old and decrepit. Watch for his fight with the beetle and how he breaks his hip trying to fight Bubba Hotep. Hilarious!
All in all, its nothing great, more like a simple film of a man confronting his mortality while trying to keep a mummy from "Sticking his lips on my asshole and suckin my soul dry"
Not a bad film, but wait for rental.
