Hellraiser:
This is most certainly a horror classic. Everything about this movie screams iconic. The imagery is very bizzare and horrific and the Cenobites are some of the greatest horror villians of all time. Here are my views:
Acting: We get mostly top notch stuff here. Ashley Laurence is great as Kirsty. Clare Higgins is perfectly cast as the sadistic mother who chooses her husband's brother over him. Her husband, Larry, played by Andrew Robinson is very sympathetic in his role as the husband betrayed by his own wife. Frank, played by Sean Chapman, is even crazier and more hateful than the cenobites in his role. His skinless appearence also makes him kind of iconic. I feel he was overlooked as a bad guy by Pinhead, who, played by Doug Bradley, became a horror icon with this film. However, I feel the Chatterer (Nicholas Vince) is even creepier, weirder, and cooler than Pinhead himself. His chattering teeth and hideous appearence should have made him a horror icon. Overall, a great cast.
FX: Man, this movie gives us this by the bucketfull. More gooey, gory FX and Makeup than you can shake a chain at. The Cenobites are sutably hideous and iconic and their makeup FX are outstanding. They could pass as real. Much gore effects and blood is spread throughout the film. Frank's makeup FX are also outstanding and hideous. The most disgusting scene in the film, Frank's first Regeneration from a pile of mush, is definently amazing but quite revolting and queasily powerful. A great job in this department.
Direction: Clive Barker knows horror. Every scene is given a forboding and unsettling feeling with Barker's direction. The scene when the Cenobites are summoned by Kirsty in the hospital is the most atmospheric and unsettling scene in the film. Great Direction.
Overall: This is a classic any self respecting horror fan should see. The only thing hampering this materpiece is a very unsattisfying and quite stupid ending. After watching this I can safely say they do not make horror movies like this anymore.
Rating 9/10
