WARNING: CONTAINS SPOILERS!
The Shining
Without question the best haunted house film ever made. Dynamic and chilling, The Shining offers its fair share of gruesome imagery and frightening events.
Acting: Two Words: Here's Johnny. Jack Nicholson's performance in The Shining is, in my opinion, the best performance in a horror film. Ever. His many infinitely quotable one liners are fantastic. Without his performance, the film wouldn't stand out nearly as much. He looks, sounds, and seems completely insane and pretty much IS the film. Shelly Duvall was sympathetic in her situation as it is, but she looks absoultely horrified when Jack blows a fuse. When it comes to looking scared, Shelly Duvall sets the bar REALLY high. Danny Lloyd was only 5 years old when the movie was made and he does an incredible job.
FX: While this wasn't an effects heavy movie, the effects are very convincing when they're there. The blood elevator looks great and is very iconic. The little girl bodies are very real looking, too. The woman in room 237 (or 217) looks great when you first see her (full frontal nudity- eye candy) but when she gets old, the makeup is sickeningly convincing. I'm actually not sure if it IS makeup. Jack's frozen body looks good too, although I find it very funny looking.
Direction: Stanley Kubrick knows what he's doing. I understand Stephen King was unhappy with the film because Kubrick changed his story and made it his own story, which I don't blame King for at all, but I was intrigued by Kubrick's vision of the story. He kept things on the set very tense, especially for Shelly Duvall, to get the right reactions out of them. Kubrick's vision was nightmarish and very creepy. Great Direction.
Overall: If you consider yourself a horror fan, you must've seen The Shining. It excells in all categories and is truly a masterpiece of terror. All work and no play make this a great film.
Rating: 10/10
