Why did pazuzu jump into the priest, when the demon would be smart enough to figure out he was up to somthing?

I don't know the full answer, but the book has Regan studying Satan and demons and messing around with dark forces.
As for smart enough, so was Morningstar, Lucifer himself, but PRIDE took over and he tried to best God. The demon wanted to best the priest and corrupt the holy.
