The recent prequel trilogy of STAR WARS has effectively become a victim of it's own success and when George Lucas says resignedly that kids want to see the likes of THE MATRIX instead of Luke and Co, it throws up an interesting juxtaposition as to whether we are faithful to the things that got us going to see movies in the first place.
HALLOWEEN II is one such example. Made three years after the original hit and umpteen rip-offs etc, it was clearly having a lot to live up to and in light of VISITING HOURS just being released around the same time, it wasn't an original concept, although it is a good deal better than Boaz Davidson's X-RAY, released also at that point.
The sequel loses ground, as some films like this do, by not really focusing on the facelessness behind the mask of Michael Myers, which made the original film even scarier for all that and proves that the psychology of a horror film can do wonders and pay dividends if assessed more intensely. It worked in PSYCHO in 1960 and there is no reason why such a timeless concept can't work here either.
However, the strength is in some of the key horror moments, especially during the jacuzzi dalliance of two hospital workers, which lend more weight to the argument that these were added on in post-production by Carpenter after director Rick Rosenthal had finished shooting.
Summing up, HALLOWEEN II is an honourable failure and is a bit better than some films around the year of release.

I liked Halloween 2. A very good sequel.

I like how you can play both the original and the sequel back to back. It has a good sense of continuity since the sequel kicks off immediately after the originals ending. There should be a DVD release completely combining the two films.

That's a great part of part 2. It picks up right after the first one. The most effective scenes were: 1) When the guy is killed by Michael near the hottub without any noise and the girl doesn't notice, 2) When the nurse is killed in front of Laurie in the hallway, and 3) When Michael's eyes are shot and he scrambles around swinging his knife.

I think Halloween 2 may be the best Halloween in the series, Michaels Burning scene was the best.

The best sequel. I can't see how people will give the original a perfect rating, and only give this half of that. At least 7/10. ;D

I think "Halloween II" is a very good sequal. I think it would be considered a better movie if it didn't have "Halloween" to compete with. So while, I think "Halloween II" is a wonderful movie, it just fails to live up to the original.

I always found H2 better than H1, it seemed more scary.

I guess I could see that, since it is supposed to be seamless (the "Halloween II" even including like 5 minutes from the original). However, while Rick Rosenthal tried to stay fairly true to Carpenter's direction, it just doesn't work as well, and I think this is possibly the onl movie where I think the gore hurt the movie more than it helped. All this is obviously just my opinion though.

One thing to remember is that the footage at the beginning of HALLOWEEN 2 is not the original footage. It was in fact shot by Rick Rosenthal as opposed to Carpenter. The camera angle as Myers falls off the balcony is different.

The best scene in H2 is where Michael gets shot in the eyes and is literally taking a wild stab in the dark.
