BELOW IS MY ORIGINAL REVIEW FOR AVP. UNDERNEATH IT IS MY NEW, UPDATED REVIEW.
It's funny how convincing reviews can sound. They can sound so convincing and convince you an unseen movie is trash. But the only way to know is to see the movie.
AvP is certainly not a gigantic error and piece of shit it has been proclaimed. The reviews of the film that were negative were WAAAAAAY too critical, just looking for flaws. The film isn't great, but is good.
The FX are probably the highlight. The Aliens are absolutely great. They look amazing and are as cool as ever. The Predators are well done too, but their faces behind the masks are somewhat lacking. The CGI is very good when used and didn't bother me at all.
The atmosphere is another big plus. The dark, cold, claustrophobic location is a big assett. The flare lighting and cold dark lighting and shading like a combo of Alien and The Thing is perfect for the film. Sometimes it is hard to see though.
The premise is also very good. The pyramid for the ultimate hunt idea is really quite creative. The rotating rooms and mazes would really create the ultimate hunt. Now, many people questioned why the Predators would kill the humans if they were important to the ritual and why Predators were killed so easily. Well, the first one is quite simple: they have all the humans they need in the chamber of eggs and the humans started the hunt without them getting their weapons, so they're pissed. The 2nd one is easy as well, for the Predators didn't get their guns, so they were up against Aliens with no projectile weapons save for spears and nets.
However, there is a major flaw: If the Predators like warm humid climates as said in 1 and 2, why would they go to a pyramid in a antarctica?
The acting ain't bad, but it ain't great. Sanna Lathan and Lance Henriksen are the good ones. Sanna is likeable as Lex and despite her having a sob story, it was a sob story with dignity (ie no tears or weeping). Henriksen is fine as usual but isn't really developed. He makes due with what he has. The rest are disposable.
The main problem is the fact that the movie spends NO BUILDUP TIME. There is a 2 minute introduction for only Sebastian and Lex and that's it. Right into the action. To care about the characters, we need to KNOW them. Some dialouge is dumb as well. While this is important, the film has a comic book feel resulting from this. The film isn't anthing new, but the same can be said of Alien Ressurection and Predator 2.
However, AvP wasn't the disaster it was claimed to be by fans. I love all the films and while this is the worst, it's fun, interesting, and entertaining with a pace that never slows down. At the very least, you'll enjoy the action and seeing Aliens and Predators on screen. It's a film that has the spirit of a comic, which is good in many aspects, but not good on some others. I love the films, but I also love the comics, which is what this film truly feels like.......
UPDATED REVIEW:
What the fuck was I thinking. After a while after seeing AvP, I've grown to dislike it more and more every time I think back to it. Seriously, the acting is horrible, the script is laughable, and the characters are fools. Even the okay Alien Ressurection had a ton better characters, locations, and dialouge.
AvP does have some, though few, attributes that save it from being a suck fest. One, it's actually pretty fun, and will entertain you for a while. Seond, the Aliens and Predators are cool, and the effects are good. Next, comic fans should enjoy it.
But seriously, an AvP movie shouldn't be as good as a comic. It should be a ton better! I know a large percentage of Alien and Predator fans could write a better, more serious, just flat out better script than Paul Anderson, a so called "die hard fan" (that's a laugh) of both series, has scribbled out. The dialouge ranges from laughable (what was with the whole "condom" bit?), to mildly decent. Seriously, a true Alien/ Predator fan knows what would make a good Alien vs Predator film.
I heard Alien 6 will be written by Paul Aderson as well (and that just sucks for the Alien/ Predator fans). He's not the worst director ever (that place goes to Uwe Boyle), he's actually made some films worth seeing (Event Horizon was good and Resident Evil was decent). But this is just sad. RIP the days of good Alien and Predator films, for no doubt a long string of shitty Paul Anderson-ized sequels will follow........
4/10
