This movie from 1973 has lots to like, I found myself enjoying it.
The story is set inside a mental asylum with patients who are all different enough to stand out. Everyone from the former Judge to the solider. Some of them are cliched but you still find them weird enough to create a cast of characters to enjoy.
There are two doctors and a nurse has her first day as we get to know the people. THe judge wants to kill bad people, the solider who still thinks the war is going on, the nypmho who grows to attached and so forth and so on.
As the young nurse comes in on first day, she finds the head doctor is missing and the second in charge, the female doctor has taken over. SHe seems to know nothing about hiring a new girl. The mystery from there only deepens, you get a general sense of unease from the place as the female doctor seems nervous all the time and sometimes not in control of the place.
The movie starts with the Judge killing the head doctor with an axe. The movie jumps ahead to when the nurse shows up a few days later and after some back and forth gets the job. As she learns the patients along with you, you sense the wrongness and the female doctor acts shady, hiding patient reports and getting upset and nervous when the telephone repair man shows up.
As things start to go downhill for our new nurse you are left trying to figure out what is going on and why. Not much death in this one but the suspense builds in a way that movies today don't do well or even try at. The movie keeps you guessing and slowly builds to the climax,which was a twist as you don't know who to trust. The whole thing is set in the asylum but there are enough people to keep you intersted in what is going on for the whole movie.
The only downside is the movie gets a little slow at times as you wait for the next forward jump in the movie but the new nurse is not bad on the eyes..lol. So if you enjoy the more suspensful and less slash and hack horror movies by all means you should rent this one.
