Running a close second in my book to CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST in terms of a movie that delivers on it's desire to shock and repulse, I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE is another movie that provides food for thought. It is also known as DAY OF THE WOMAN.
A young female writer (Camille Keaton, a relative of legendary comic Buster) takes a trip into the woods to write her latest novel. However, like the four men in DELIVERANCE, she falls foul of locals and becomes the object of a brutal sexual attack.......
I saw this for the first time at a club cinema in London in uncut form in 1999 and found it quite uncomfortable to watch. As with HENRY - PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER, the power of the visuals is not the reason why the film is brutal. Other movies, like THELMA & LOUISE, are more thoughtful in their handling of the aftermath of sexual trauma and as a romantically-minded male who appreciates women as people, such films must be sensitively handled to have greater impact for me.
The thing with a lot of films like this released in the early 80's is that they weren't seen as parables to real-life events in way that the likes of NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD and TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE mirrored the Vietnam War, so the power within them in within their own creativity.
I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE is definitely one to watch in the context of it's historical position in horror history. Whether or not you agree with the point it makes ultimately is for the individual watching it.

It also has one of the most disgusting scenes I have ever saw in a film, I wont give it away, but any man watching it would hurt...alot.
