"It's me billy."
Black Christmas is sadly not very noticed in the eyes of horror fans, and that is a true shame. Black Christmas, a film years before Halloween, allready had the "no gore, more creepy" feeling perfectly mastered. A truly creepy flick, Black Christmas is now getting more of the reccognition it deserves. I can only help more people get to see it.
The film is the tale of a sorority house where a strange man has been calling and giving them obscene messages. And ever so un-noticed, the killer picks off some one-by-one, unbeknownst to the rest. Sounds pretty traditional, eh? Well, as far as the plot goes, it is. But this film doesn't rely on a complex plot......
What it relys on is creeping you out. And it does it well. Now, if you think serial killers calling and saying things is pretty general, forget all those un-scary and ridiculously derivative phone calls from Scream, pal, because this movie mastered phone call scares to a T. The phone calls are truly deranged, and you know the sick bastard on the other end is completely nuts. Completely obscene, deranged, and possibly schizophrenic, the killer's calls are so bizzre and the voice styles seem so different you wonder how one man could do it alone.
The acting is also decent, actually good, much better than your average slasher acting. And stupid moves aren't irritaiting like other movies, for when there are stupid character moves, it's something that won't drive you nuts and make you think "Come'on! You did THAT!?" The directing is very well done, using a lot of psycho points-of-view. The ending is also incredibly good and will satisfy your need for non-hollywood endings.
The use of music is perfect. Using happy Christmas tunes like "Silent Night" and "O' Come Let Us Adore Him" in this film just created a feeling of unease that I loved. Black Christmas is a minor cult film, and even more a great horror film.
