Well, seeing as one of my rentals, My Bloody Valentine, would not fit in my VCR for some reason, I decided to watch a favorite of mine, Stigmata.
Before I delve into this film, I watched the previews again, and this made me giggle. Its for a movie called Chill Factor, I think, anyway, this is the opening tag line.
"The worlds most powerful weapon has been handed off to a short order cook...and an ice cream truck driver!"
I'm not fucking kidding. Who in the hell hears this and green lights it??
"Yes, sounds like a rock em sock em good time!! Get Cuba Gooding Jr. to play the wacky negro!"
Anywho, onto the movie. I may overrate this movie as I am a big fan of spiritual thrillers, involving religions and demons and the such. I, myself, am an Athiest, but I find the stories to be enthralling.
This story is about Frankie Page, played by Patricia Arquette, who is a supposed 23 year old Cosmotoligist who recieves the wounds of Christ. I say supposed cause she looks utterly haggared, rode hard, put away wet, know what I'm gettin at? But it works this time, cause shes a heavy smoking, drinking, club kid.
She recieves a care package from her mother, that contains, among other things, a Rosary of a dead Brazilian Priest. Soon after odd things happen, she experiences the wounds of the Stigmata, the same wounds of, Jesus Christ.
Soon after, Father Andrew, played by Gabriel Byrne, visits Frankie to find out what plagues her, all the while turning the film into a God vrs the evil Church scenario.
Stigmata was an excellent film and a favorite of mine. Weather your religious or not, the film is well done, the acting is very good, and the music that Billy Corgan put to this film was stellar. Catholics may be a bit offended for the shots taken at the Catholic Church, so if your an offendable pantywaste, you may not want to watch. I give this movie 4.5 out of 5 beers, solid solid output.
