PSYCHO, both film and novel, put the concept on the map, but there was another film released around the same time that dealt with it with even more extreme purpose, all the more so considering the time and year it was made. It was banned in the UK for four decades and has only just surfaced on DVD.
SHOCK CORRIDOR, directed by Samuel Fuller, who directed Mark Hamill in THE BIG RED ONE, adapted his film from a story called LUNATIC and was influenced by a French thriller some years before. The plot involves a reporter who poses, CUCKOO'S NEST-fashion, as a mental patient in order to expose a murderer who is in the facility. However, all is not what it seems.
I bring this movie to the attention of other Fight-Evil members, simply because it has a resonance and power within it's 95 minute running time that rivals other more recent movies in the genre (SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, HENRY). It is psychologically terrifying and intense and I did find it uncomfortable to watch.

Interesting. Good review. I've never heard of the film, but your review has sparked my interest.

Indeed,
The release in the UK was part of a double-bill with another of Fuller's films, THE NAKED KISS, which I have still to watch.

SPOILER...
Well, I saw Shock Corridor yesterday and it's amazing how closely it resembled One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Doom, I am sure you've seen that classic, and while watching Shock Corridor did you notice any of the similarities? I certainly did. A sane person conning himself into a mental asylum and coming out a vegetable. It was a solid film that worked on many levels and one could say it was ahead of its time. The black man thinking he was white is a key example.

True, but I think you'll agree that SHOCK CORRIDOR, although it wasn't a wide-reaching film like CUCKOO'S NEST with it's historical Oscar win (the first film since IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT to win the 5 major categories), it does have as much impact.
Happy New Year to you and all FE members!

although it wasn't a wide-reaching film like CUCKOO'S NEST with it's historical Oscar win, it does have as much impact. Shock Corridor didn't impact me as much as Cuckoo's Nest. Cuckoo's Nest had stronger actors and characters. It was also one of the very few movies that actually made me cry.
