Hi all. Here is a review to kick off under my new username.
Jane Fonda won an Oscar as Bree Daniels, the callgirl who is under suspicion of being behind the disappearance of a businessman. A private investigator, John Klute (Donald Sutherland) is assigned to the case and gradually begins to become more intimately involved with her.
Although not as romantic or heartwarming as PRETTY WOMAN would be nearly 20 years later, KLUTE is a perceptive adult drama with tremendous performances from all concerned and some excellent cinematography from Gordon Willis, who shot THE GODFATHER in the same year. This is far closer in spirit to the original script of PRETTY WOMAN, 3000 if that film had not been altered to be more audience-friendly.
Michael Small's music, an essential part of this and other seminal 70's classics like ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN, THE DRIVER and MARATHON MAN, is haunting in the same way that the late Jerry Fielding's scores were for the likes of THE WILD BUNCH and STRAW DOGS.
