I usually like to keep the tickets for every movie I see in the theatre and I stick them onto a board until I take them off when the year ends. After I take them off the board they go straight into a box where I keep a bunch of other tickets from previous years. It's interesting to look back at them and see what films you thought were worthy of spending money on. I thought it would be fun to share it with you guys.
Ginger Snaps II (Date: January 30th. My first film of 2004. I think we only got this released in theatres here in Canada since it is a Canadian production. I liked how it started off, but the ending sucked. 6/10.)
Starsky & Hutch (Date: March 5th. Wasn't too bad I guess. It had only a FEW funny moments that caused the audience to laugh hysterically. 6/10.)
Spartan (Date: March 10th. I won double passes for this on a website, otherwise I would have definitely not spent a dime to see it. It was too all over the place, lacked focus. 3/10.)
Secret Window (March 12th. Probably the biggest disappointment of 2004. I mean, based on a Stephen King story, starring Johnny Depp, and John Turturro. What can go wrong? Everything. Especially the ending which I saw coming 30 minutes in cos it was such a cliche of all cliches. 4/10.)
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (March 22nd. I am bias towards this film since I am not a fan of romantic comedies and I hate Jim Carrey. All the hype surrounding this film was so positive that I just had to see it. I regret not renting the DVD instead. 3/10.)
The Ladykillers (March 26th. All the critics bashed the crap out of this film, calling it the Coen brothers WORST film ever. Being a huge Coen brothers fan I ignored all that and bought my tickets. I am glad I ignored the hype, cos The Ladykillers (I hate remakes, but oh well) turned out to be a hilarious dark comedy. I LOVE dark comedies!! 8/10.)
Well, that's it for March. I seemed to have seen a lot of movies during that particular month. I guess it was in order to make up for not seeing any in February.
Hellboy (April 2nd. It was a cool action/horror flick with awesome special effects. The perfect popcorn film, I wouldn't go beyond that. 7/10.)
Kill Bill Vol. 2 (April 16th. Interesting film, but you can just picture Tarantino geeking over the LONG ass monologues and dialogues he wrote. As in, "Oh, that's cool, he would say that 'cos it's cool". It should have been as fast and as balls out as Vol. 1. Too bad they slowed it down. 6/10.)
Van Helsing (May 12th. I wanted to see a big ass flashy action packed stupid popcorn flick and that's exactly what I got. This film was LOUD!! I even saw it on a huge IMAX screen so it was LOUDER than normal. Gets 5/10 for slightly entertaining me, nothing else.)
Shrek 2 (May 29th. I don't usually watch animated movies for children, but my friends wanted to see it so I tagged along. I can't give this a rating since I don't even know what attracts grown-ups without kids to these films. Inner child perhaps? I don't have one.)
Chronicles of Riddick (June 11th. Great action, effects, and individual ideas. As a whole it was just too much. Sort of like Rambo in space. 5/10.)
Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story (June 21st. I love the game of dodgeball. I was the #1 player in dodgeball back in elementary school! I used to play dodgeball in the arcade and then on my Playstation when I was a kid as much as I possibly could!! I LOVE the game! To see a movie based on a game I love so much is awesome. However, I don't recall playing dodgeball like they did in the film. We only used ONE ball to avoid confusion and once you were out...you were out for good, no coming back. Anyway, it was a decent comedy, nothing special. 5/10.)
Spider-man 2 (June 30th. Part 1 was a nice little introduction to a character with some cool action, but part 2 blows it away!! I mean, we got Spidey all ready to rock n' roll from the beginning!! Awesome action, with a solid story. 8/10.)
Spider-man 2 (July 1st. And the next day I see it again!! With friends this time.)
The Village (July 30th. I am a huge M. Night Shyamalan fan so there was no question I wanted to see this flick. I went in expecting a horror film (the ads fooled me) but that's not what I got. It didn't really matter because it still turned out be a solid interesting film, very thought provoking. 7.5/10.)
Exorcist: The Beginning (Oh lord, what a waste of $9.25. Horrible story and special effects, too many BOO! moments that were annoying, not scary. I give this 1 point for some good gore, nothing else. 1/10.)
During the month of August I recall going to the Festival of Fear where I saw Dead & Breakfast and Ginger Snaps Back. Since then Ginger Snaps Back has gone to straight to DVD and Dead & Breakfast is going in that direction too, sooner or later. They were two good films.
Saw (September. I won admittance to see this so I don't know the exact date since there I was just basically let in to this very private screening without needing a pass. My name was on a list at the front. Anyway, I was disappointed due to the lack of gore (I guess I saw the 'cut' version) and it was just too elaborate. 4/10.)
The Grudge (November 5th. Still very effective even though I have seen the Japanese version before this and it was almost scene for scene the same damn thing so I knew what to expect. A few chilling moments...I also like Sarah Michelle Gellar, hehe. 7/10.)
Seed of Chucky (November 15th. A fun silly little film with some solid unexpected in-your-face gore. Not bad. I got the hots for Jennifer Tilly too, hehe. 6/10.)
The Machinist (November 19th. While visiting NYC I had the opportunity to see this film since they didn't play it in Toronto. Man, I so regret not seeing it there, but lucky for me two weeks later I looked through the newspaper for the movie listings and bam!! There it was, The Machinist playing in some arthouse theatre. This is a great powerful thriller/drama/horror. The BEST movie I've seen in 2004, and the last one too. 8.5/10.)
That be all, folks. That was actually longer than expected.
