Look, I love Stephen King and Lovcraft as much as the next Jimmy, but I have to give props to my main man R. L. Stein. Please! Let me explain! I had already read most of the Stephen King stuff by the time I was 10, but it was Stein who only got me really scared. With the odd Goosebump book he chilled me right to the bone, serious, he knew all the right strings to pull for any young person, and as I read some of his serious stuff, I found out he knew how to pull the strings for the older crowd. No other author could portray isolation and desperation as well as Stein, its just that people only know him as the Goosebumps guy and automatically think of him as a kids author. This man was in control the entire time, much like Batman. Most authors seem to take chances, potshots with narrative structure, what characterisation to put in, what to leave out, Stein had control and knew exactly what to do. Sure Stephen King has produced some gold, but lets be honest, he doesn't have that 75% chance of creating gold every time. Oh yeah, Stein did lose control of a lot of Goosebumps and kind of shat some issues out, but still, if he cared for somthing, he knew what to do.

yeah, in elementary school me and some of my friends went through a faze where we read nothing but goosebumps... some of them were pretty good. roughly one in every dozen was actually scary, but its the principle of the thing. to this day i still have atleast 15 books by stein

I used to have quite a few Goosebumps and yes, a handful gave me the creeps. Didn't quite scare me as much as The Wizard of Oz.
